Frequently asked questions

What is hydrographic activity?
Hydrographic activity is a branch of applied science that includes the measurement of sea depths (bathymetry), rivers and lakes, geodetic and other surveys of objects on the coast, in the sea, on the seabed and underwater; marine geodesy; oceanology (registration of fluctuations in sea level, surface waves, sea currents, thermohaline parameters), geology and geophysics of the sea, environmental protection in the parts of the sea over which the sovereignty of the Republic of Croatia extends and the economic and epicontinental zone over which the Republic of Croatia exercises sovereign rights and jurisdiction; processing and storage of data collected by measurement,
For what purposes are hydrographic measurements made?
Hydrographic surveys (mainly bathymetric) are carried out for the purpose of scientific research, updating and publishing new official publications of the Croatian Hydrographic Institute (nautical charts, compasses, advertisements for seafarers, etc.). For economic purposes, i.e. in the construction of new maritime structures, submarine infrastructure or mariculture, hydrographic measurements are carried out for the purpose of creating projects and studies, during construction as control measurements and after construction, as snapshots of the performed state for entry into maritime charts and obtaining a usable permits.
Who in Croatia deals with hydrographic surveying?
In our country, hydrographic surveys are handled by Authorized Legal Entities (OPOs) who operate on the basis of the Act on Hydrographic Surveys and the Rulebook on the Methods and Conditions for Performing Hydrographic Surveys by Authorized Legal Entities. These jobs are mainly carried out for economic purposes, i.e. in the construction of various maritime structures and infrastructure. The Croatian Hydrographic Institute, as the umbrella organization for hydrography in Croatia, mainly deals with surveys aimed at maintaining and improving the safety of navigation, but it also carries out surveys for commercial purposes.
